Connection Time is the amount of time that the browser spends establishing a connection to your server. This includes DNS resolution time and the intial TCP connection establishment. A browser needs to connect to your server typically once for each asset on the page. This metric is impacted by the performance of your DNS infrastructure, the proximity of your server to the browser, and the connection handling efficiency of your server.
Once the browser connects to your webserver, it sends a request to fetch a resource. The server must process this request, generate a response, and then send that response to the browser. First Byte Time measures the amount of time it takes for the browser to receive the first byte of the response from the server.
After the server has generated a response, it must transmit the data back to the browser. The Last Byte time measures the amount of time it takes to send a response to the browser. This metric is cumulative and includes the Connection Time and First Byte Time metrics.
